Last, width and instep: why the same size can feel different

Two pairs with the same number can feel different because size describes mainly the length, while the last defines the shape and the internal volume.

What you should check

  • Measure both feet in centimetres and use the longer one
  • Tell sideways pressure apart from a lack of length
  • Notice whether your instep fills too much or too little of the volume
  • Set the laces from the bottom up before judging the pair
  • Assess the heel after walking indoors only

Why it matters in real use

Footwear works as a whole: size, last, upper, closure, sole and components all interact. A single isolated feature is not enough to declare that a model will be the best for every person or every route.

The materials, components and constructions cited here correspond to the technical information published by Umberto Luce. Price, promotions and stock can change by size and should be checked at the time of purchase.

Umberto Luce Bonhan
Bonhan: a Rider cowhide sneaker, 2E last, D3O and a TR polymer sole.
Umberto Luce Wagon
Wagon: a Rider+ boot in brown cowhide, leather lining, Kevlar laces, D3O and a natural rubber sole.

How to apply it step by step

  1. Compare your measurement with the product's current guide.
  2. Check the published last: Bonhan Classics and Wagon both declare a 2E last.
  3. Test with your usual sock and separate length, width, instep and heel.
  4. If there is pain or numbness, do not expect leather to correct an inadequate size.

How to describe the fit precisely

Avoid summing up the test as "it fits" or "it doesn't fit". Record where your longest toe ends, how much your heel moves, what happens at the sides and how the instep feels with the closure properly set. Test both feet: a small difference can decide the choice.

The feel has to be judged standing and walking on a clean indoor surface. Bending the footwear with your hands or squeezing the toe from outside does not reproduce how the foot behaves. If there is pain, numbness or point pressure, stop the test and ask for guidance.

What information helps support

Share your order number, model, size, the measurement of both feet, the sock you used and the exact area of the problem. Clear photographs of the pair and of the unworn sole help document its condition. This information makes it possible to tell a size question, a last question and a possible product case apart.

The 2E last on Umberto Luce models

Bonhan Classics and Wagon both publish a 2E last, but they do not feel the same: Bonhan is a low-cut sneaker with a TR polymer sole; Wagon is a boot with a leather lining, Kevlar laces and a natural rubber sole. The letter of the last describes the width of the base, not the height of the upper or the exact volume of the instep. That is why two 2E models can hold the ankle and flex differently.

Sign during the test What it may mean What to do
Toes hitting the front Not enough length Try a size up; wear does not create length
Constant pressure at the sides Insufficient width or over-tightening Readjust from the base; if it persists, change size or model
Pressure over the instep Insufficient internal volume Loosen the mid area without losing heel hold
Heel lifting as you walk Excess volume or a loose closure Readjust; if the movement is wide, compare another size

The useful rule: a slight, evenly distributed firmness can change with wear; pain, numbness, compressed toes or excessive heel movement are not a normal part of breaking in.

Mistakes worth avoiding

  • Choosing on appearance or a promotion alone.
  • Copying your size from another brand without measuring.
  • Turning a material or component into an absolute guarantee.
  • Ignoring your riding and the time you spend walking.
  • Wearing the pair outside before confirming the fit.

Frequently asked questions

What is a last?

The three-dimensional form the footwear is built over; it influences width, volume and silhouette.

Does 2E mean I should size down?

No. Width does not replace measuring the length.

Does leather give?

It can adapt at flex points, but it does not correct a lack of length.
