Motorcycle sneakers: what to check before choosing a pair

Motorcycle sneakers keep a low silhouette, but they should not be confused with a casual trainer. To know whether a model suits your riding you have to look at its construction: outer material, ankle protection, toe and heel reinforcements, the join between upper and sole, the last, and a gear-lever guard where one is included.

What a useful spec sheet should state

A spec sheet for motorcycle sneakers should state at least the upper, lining, sole, type of construction, reinforcements, ankle protection, last and warranty. The phrase "for motorcycling" does not replace that data. Nor does it mean every model is the same.

  • D3O®: impact-absorbing material placed at the ankles.
  • Tecnodeal Premium®: thermoplastic reinforcement used at the toe and heel.
  • Lockstitcher: the stitch that keeps the sole joined to the upper.
  • Sole: may be TR polymer or vulcanised natural rubber depending on the model.
  • 2E last: a width reference that has to be combined with measuring your foot.

Bonhan Classics: the Rider classic

Bonhan Classics is one of the classic models and a favourite among Umberto Luce customers. It belongs to the Rider line, with a 12-month warranty. Its spec sheet declares cowhide, D3O® at the ankles, Tecnodeal Premium® reinforcements at the toe and heel, Lockstitcher construction and a TR polymer sole. It is the reference choice if you want the original Bonhan silhouette and Rider construction.

Bonhan X: a different construction and the Rider+ line

Bonhan X belongs to the Rider+ line, with a 24-month warranty. It adds a leather lining, D3O®, Tecnodeal Premium® toe and heel, Lockstitcher construction, a removable gear-lever guard and a Vulka sole in vulcanised natural rubber. It is not simply a cosmetic variation on Bonhan Classics: the line, the sole and the equipment all change.

Bonhan X adds a Vulka sole and a removable gear-lever guard.

Troll: a low silhouette with a Vulka sole

Troll is also Rider+. Its spec sheet shows D3O® at the ankles, Tecnodeal Premium® toe and heel, Lockstitcher and a Vulka sole. Against Bonhan X, the most visible difference is the design of the upper and the way the pair fits into an everyday wardrobe. The decision should rest on the fit and the silhouette that work best for your foot, not only on a list of shared components.

How to check the fit

  1. Measure both feet at the end of the day and keep the larger measurement.
  2. Wear the socks you normally ride in.
  3. Check that your heel does not lift excessively.
  4. Make sure your toes have room and do not hit the toe box.
  5. Flex your foot and mimic the movement over the gear lever.
  6. Do the test indoors on a clean surface.

When should you choose sneakers over boots?

Sneakers may suit you better if you ride mainly in the city, make a lot of stops and prefer a low silhouette off the bike. A boot starts from a higher shaft and more coverage. To compare both categories against the same criteria, read motorcycle boots or sneakers.
